Tutorial 5 of 6
Trip readiness: jet lag, connections and money
Intermediate 10 min
Plan sleep and light for a long-haul trip, rate every tight connection, compare what each way of paying abroad costs and split a restaurant bill.
The Trips section combines five tools for one trip. Open File → New from template… → Long-haul trip to Tokyo to follow along.
1. Trip and sleep
Enter the Home time zone, Destination time zone, Departure date, your usual bedtime and wake time, Days to pre-adjust before departure and your Chronotype. The Jet Lag Planner builds a day-by-day plan with wake and bed times, when to seek and avoid light and the last coffee.
2. Connections
Add one row per change of planes: the inbound Arrival (local) and the Onward departure, whether you change terminals, pass passport control, go through security again or re-check bags, the airport size, how often the inbound flight is on time and the official minimum connection time if you know it.
3. Money
Set the Spending currency and the Amount you expect to spend. Under Ways to pay list your cards, ATM and exchange options with their fees — or leave it empty and the tool compares five typical options. Split a restaurant bill takes the amount, tax, tip, the number of people (or names) and a rounding rule.
4. Plan this trip
Press Plan this trip. Hearth runs the Jet Lag Planner, the Travel Connection Checker for every connection, the Currency Converter and the Travel Exchange Fee Calculator (both with ECB reference rates) and the Tip & Bill Split Calculator.

The Trip plan card sums it up: time difference, days to adapt, the Tightest connection, the budget in your home currency and the Cheapest way to pay. Below are the Connections chart and table, Paying abroad, the Jet lag plan (with Download calendar (.ics)) and the Bill split.
Good to know
- Currency tools need a connection to the rate service; everything else works with the stored results when you are offline.
- A connection below 60 % appears on the dashboard as a warning. Ask your airline about protected connections before you book.
- The household calendar (Export → Household calendar (.ics)…) can include the sleep plan with a reminder before each wake-up time.
